Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
